Maybe someone can explain how exactly these work, because they are pissing me off.
In mosstone, i go to the sorting table and ask the gentlemen to identify my items. he says it will cost 679. i tell him to go ahead. all of my unidentified items are now taken from my inventory. Now i don't have them, i have to buy them back! what's going on??? I lost many valuable items, many of which i could have used, and i lost gold!

The way our identifying system works is that when you pick up an item you get half of its value in Aeneas (Gold) and when you go to a sorting table the Old Man (Sage) will identify your items for 10% of there original value. You still have 40% of the gold left you got from picking the item up. You can buy back the items at the sorting table at 50% of its original price.
So with the 50% you get from picking up the item and paying 50% of the item you break even gold wise except for the charge (10%) of paying the sage to identify your items. You almost always break even or have more gold then starting as long as you don't buy EVERYTHING you found on the quest.
Someone lemme know if I missed something.
Oh and by the way if you have ranks in lore, if you just select on the sorting table without talking to the old man you will identify the items automatically without being charged the 10%. Phew...

A good recap there Gromph, thank you.
As he said, you get half the items gold value just by picking it up. If you want to keep the item, then you have to pay for the second half "out of pocket." The reason we do this is to balance the loot for parties. There is usually somebody around who hangs out collecting all the loot while the rest of the party keeps battling. That person usually then ends up with the best loot while the others lose out. This way, each party member gets payed partly for the items found in exchange for letting somebody else have the item. The person buying the item back is "returning" their portion of the gold in exchange for keeping the item. Also, by sending everything to the sorting table and out of your inventory, each party member gets roughly equal chance at getting that item by buying it. When all is said and done, most times you make a profit in this exchange, unless, as Gromph mentioned, you buy back everything that you pick up.
In all cases (even if you don't have the Lore skill since it will still make a check for you), try using the Sorting Table first, then ask the man at the counter to identify your items if there is still things in your inventory unidentified. Upping your Lore skill will lessen your dependency on the Sage.
