I was playing today and I now have alot of items. scrolls, and potions, etc. that I either cannot use or do not need. I tried to sell them at shops but it says that the merchant will not buy stolen goods. How can I sell these items? Also, even when I used a Lore spell and my Lore skill was at 23 I could not identify anything! Is this normal?

There should be an option under your "More options" item (think thats what its called) to identify items. This will identify all your applicable items at once, meant to replace the tedium of selecting the items individually. You will be able to sell the items with the next mod update by placing them on what will be called a "Sorting Table" in the various shops. I think the reason that you can not just sell them to the merchants right now is because I have updated haks on the server that include these sorting table scripts. Just hold on to them for now and you will be able to sell them all shortly.

Stuff is in a bit of a mess at the moment, as we are still transitioning arcross to the new loot system. When the new ss_base.hak is out things will hopefully settle down. At the moment I think you are suffering the equivalent of -20 to your lore skill, so identifying anything but the basics is probably impossible. You used to be able to use the More Actions item to identify everything which would ignore this penalty (this all has to do with having Lore Libraries). However, in the new loot system this option has been removed, and you need to use a sorting table to identify stuff. I think the server is running a slight mix of old and new systems at the moment, so you are probably getting the -20 penalty but don't have the option to identify stuff in the More Actions menu? Anyway, in the new system the penalty is effectively -60, so you shouldn't be able to identify anything just by looking at it. You need to use the sorting tables, plus any lore books in the adjacent library (if there is one - this will be mostly for guilds). We will probably also be putting some Sage NPCs in the towns that can identify stuff for you for a price, but the details of how that will work still need to be sorted out. The problem here is that you SHOULD have the -60 penalty, but only have -20, so you have been able to identify some of the items with the standard Bioware system. This actually stuffs things up a bit. In the new system (that appears to at least partially be on the server, but shouldn't be) when loot is picked up the first time it is marked as unidentified and stolen. The stolen flag is used to stop you being able to sell unidentified items to the sorting table store (which is the equivalent of you being paid money to have an item identified ). When items are automatically identified and placed in the sorting table store the stolen flag is also cleared. So basically unidentified items should be flagged as stolen, and identified ones shouldn't be. Because you have been able to identify some items with the standard system you now have some unidentified but stolen items. I have a script at home I used last friday night in my play group to fix this problem, but I was hoping it wouldn't be an issue here. However, since we seem to be running some of the new scripts on the server it has become an issue. I will try to put a system in place when the HAKs are updated that will set all unidentifed items as non-stolen the first time the player joins. Sorry for the stuff up.

As explained further in the message above, you need to use a sorting table to identify and sell stuff. There is one in the middle of Mosstone (North).
Hard to say.
Since most of the low-level creatures are humanoids, they tend to have a lot of potions on them. At later levels (when many creatures aren't humanoids) you tend to get a lot less. Also, if you are doing wilderness areas (with lots of animals) you don't get many.
So some areas you will get a lot, in other areas basically none. On average it shouldn't be too bad.
You will also notice that the cost of potions is pretty cheap (except for healing potions, which are far more expensive). This is meant as an incentive for you to actually use them, rather than just sell them all for cash as usual. Hopefully it is much cheaper now to use all your buffing potions beforehand to prevent damage and death, compared to using healing potions (and death-taxes if you die) later.
