I tried it and it gave me the same error 71. I'll try it on the computer that doesn't have all these built-in drives tonight if I get a chance.

OK, I did some fiddling around with stuff on my computer here and I managed to reproduce the error 71. Yay! That's the biggest step in being able to fix it. I then discovered a few annoying things when debugging it... I was doing this check for each drive: IF not a CD-Rom AND drive is ready AND there is more than 400 MB free THEN do stuff I was assuming that it would short-cut the tests like most compilers would (hell, even NWScript does). So basically if it was a CD-Rom then it wouldn't continue onto the next two checks, or if the drive wasn't ready it wouldn't check for free space. Turns out this isn't the case, so the "get free space" function was being called even if the drive isn't ready. This leads to the even stranger problem... If you try to get the free space of a drive that isn't ready then it returns error 71 (drive not ready). Fair enough. The weird thing is that I have an error handler that is supposed to trap all errors, including that one, and just continue on with the next drive. Most of the time it seems to work. But for some bizarre reason that particular incarnation of error 71 isn't trapped. Go figure. Anyway, I changed the program flow to: IF not a CD-Rom THEN IF drive is ready THEN IF there is more than 400 MB free THEN do stuff END IF END IF which does the trick (at least for me). So... I have put a new version of the test installer on the website at: people.anu.edu.au/~u8800878/ccfr/ss_goober.rarSorry to keep asking, but could anyone who had the error 71 before please give it a try and post your results here. Thanks.

That doesn't sound good.
Do you remember the name of the character?
Hopefully Knightmare will have a look in your character folder for you and see what is going on.

Oh yeah. That's a prefab character of the server. Ranger/sorceror/something, I think. He's a level 45 character. I've accessed with multiple accounts and he's there every time. Like the prefab characters in the local vault.
And I hope it's okay that I just renamed md_images.hak and used it as ss_images.hak...

Yes, it's not a problem.
There are only minor differences between the two:
1) Some of the positions (line numbers) for the portraits for creatures recently released by Bioware have changed. Shouldn't be an issue - and the worse that could happen is some creatures won't have a portrait.
2) I renamed a custom portrait that was conflicting with the standard earth elemental portrait. So don't be surprised if they look like a blue-dressed woman for you.

Okay. Well, I don't mind critters not having images. I'll just keep that and replace it with the real ss_images.hak when I get it. ^^

That doesn't sound good. Do you remember the name of the character? Hopefully Knightmare will have a look in your character folder for you and see what is going on. Haylee, according to your server vault file, you have two characters in there: Lady Gasolina (last used 6/9/05) Lady Haylee Hawkmoon (last used 6/7/05) Are these not the correct character names? If these are correct and they just don't show up for you, a possible solution could be for you to create a new log in name for the NWN multiplayer, which, when you log in to the server, will create you a new server vault file. I can then transfer the 2 characters to your new server vault file.

Yeah, I have a high level character in my vault too. Some lvl 40 guy, can't remember the name. Really odd, it appeared about the beginning of the week.

Update on the rogue PC: Sorry, he is indeed level 40. I miscounted. Anyway, he's an illegal character who shows up no matter who logs in. However, he doesn't count as a pregenerated character. I told it to hide all prefab characters and it still showed him. The only thing I, being unable to access the server vault directly, can be absolutely sure of is that he shows up for all users (I have tested this and confirmed through use of multiple accounts that this is the same character every time.) He is an illegal character, and therefore unplayable. Without going into detail, here are his stats: His name is Thriand Di'ren. He is a level 40 half-elf with 12 levels of monk, 15 levels of sorceror and 13 levels of ranger. Just an FYI for the record and for anyone who hasn't bothered logging in as a player since he appeared. It can therefore probably be correctly assumed that all the accounts would work the same way. I have a character saved in my own server vault and she shows up fine. The Thriand character shows up in addition to the other existing character(s). I have never run a server, so correct me if I'm wrong, but if it's divided into folders based on multiplayer username (as I have gathered,) I think that this character might be in the root of the server vault folder itself. You might check there for such a character.

I just now downloaded the goober.rar file, extracted the .exe and ran. I recieved the message "Sorry, an unrecoverable error has occurred (ID 68). Please contact me (Ima Dufus) on the Shattered Souls forum so I can identify the problem. Program will now terminate."
I think that maybe, on my computer, it's searching the empty media drives (for stuff like digital camera cards) first (you did seem to be telling it to only ignore CD drives and not other ones.) I'm going to try turning them off and trying again. I'll edit this post to reflect the results.
EDIT: Ugh. The CD drive is full and the random media drives are off. There is no floppy drive. Goober.exe is still giving me the same error message with recommendation to contact Ima. I tried to run ss_images.exe (which I have leftover from my first try) and it still gave me the same error 71. I'm out of ideas. And nowhere as knowledgeable as Ima when it comes to this.

Perhaps some of you out there recognize the character name? Please let me know if the character is still there, I think I have fixed it.

First off, thank you for testing this and posting your results here. It is only by doing this that I will be able to hunt down the bugs.
The fact that you are getting that message is actually a good thing (honest). It means that you are now getting all the way through the loop that searches for your NWN directory. So those bug fixes I did yesterday at least seem to be working.
That error message is given if the error handler is called after the loop. That is basically the section that sets the visible directory display to the chosen directory. Obviously something in there isn't wotking either. If it didn't manage to find your NWN directory it should be defaulting to C:/. Error 68 is "device unavailable", and occurs when you try to access a drive that doesn't exist.
LOL...
Oops. I just had a quick look at the program. I had set the default drive to D: (which is my CD drive) to do some bug testing. I was supposed to change it back to C:, but obviously forgot. Damn.
I have just set it back to C:, so if you have the patience can you please download it again and give it another go. Sorry.
Also, if you don't mind me asking, what is the path to your NWN directory (obviously it isn't a "standard" one since it isn't being found).
Actually it now also skips all removeable drives. This includes floppies, and probably USB drives. I just didn't mention it.
Which I guess is extra proof that the fixes I did yesterday are working - since otherwise the new version would also be getting the error 71. Well, at least that's good news.

I have NWN buried somewhere within my files. I'm not sure about the specific path... -.- Anyway, I could create a dummy C:/NeverwinterNights/NWN/hak and then run it...

No that's OK, please don't put yourself out.
I just thought if it was the sort of path that lots of people might be using then I could add it to the list of locations to check. You know, like if instead of "c:/Neverwinter Nights/..." you had "C:/NWN/..." or something.
